Building Permit Levy - Tasmania

Service summary

New Tasmanian building laws have come into effect from the 1 January 2017. These laws will update requirements for building and plumbing work. This record will be updated to reflect the new building laws in early January.

Tasmanian legislation requires Councils to collect a levy on all building work costing $20,000 or more.

The levy is paid into a State Government Trust fund. It is used solely to improve the regulatory environment to ensure that Tasmania's building industry is modern, efficient, and able to respond to future challenges. A building permit cannot be issued until the levy is paid.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

In applying for a building permit, an applicant is to supply the following:

  • Information regarding the contract price for the building work, including the cost of labour and materials; or
  • If there is no contract price, a statement by a building surveyor of the estimated cost of the building work, including the cost of labour and materials.
