Dangerous Goods Vehicle Licence - Tasmania

Service summary

You will require this licence if you drive a vehicle transporting dangerous goods where they:

  • exceed 500 litres or kilograms for a container
  • exceed 3000 litres for an intermediate bulk container (IBC), not filled or emptied on the vehicle
  • are risk category 2 or 3 load for Class 1 explosives.

Dangerous goods are defined in the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail (ADG Code) and may include: gases, flammable liquids and solids, oxidizing substances, substances liable to spontaneous combustion, toxic substances, infectious substances, corrosive substances, organic peroxides and substances dangerous if wet.

You must be able to demonstrate that under the provisions of all the relevant codes and standards your vehicle complies with the following:

  • vehicle and equipment maintenance
  • personal protective equipment and vehicle safety equipment
  • tank design and construction
  • general roadworthiness.

Drivers will also need to possess a Dangerous Goods Drivers Licence. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • provide the registration number, make and type of the road vehicle
  • state the type of dangerous goods intended to be transported
  • inform the Agency of any other dangerous goods vehicle licences for another vehicle
  • satisfy the Agency that your vehicle and equipment is maintained in a safe condition for use
  • satisfy the Agency that you have personal protective equipment and vehicle safety equipment
  • satisfy the Agency that your vehicle meets roadworthiness standards.

Up to three years.





Please lodge your form and the accompanying documents directly to the Agency. You will need to include a completed application form, the prescribed fee, and the tank design approval number, including current testing and inspection documentation.
