Description

You will need one of these licences if you intend to operate premises, or use, sell, repair, dispose of, possess, or take part in any other activity that deals with radioactive materials or sources.

A radiation source is a thing that emits or may emit radiation. It can be radioactive material or a radioactive apparatus. Radioactive material is material that spontaneously emits ionising radiation as a consequence of nuclear transformations. A radiation apparatus is an apparatus that produces radiation when energised, or is, if assembled or repaired, capable of producing radiation when energised.

For example, radioactive sources are used by importers / exporters, hospitals, medical practitioners, pharmacists, research institutions, manufacturers, geological surveyors, universities and oil rigs.

Approval time

Radiation Protection Act 2005. Statutory time frame to decide an application. The Director of Public Health is taken to have decided to refuse to grant an application under Division 1, 2 or 3 of this Part if he or she has failed to dermine the application - (a) within 90 days after its receipt. However, administrative processes mean applications are usually determined within 2-4 week period. Some applications are complex and require follow up and further information.

Additional information

If you need a licence to possess a radiation source, then you will have to submit a Radiation Management Plan (RMP) with your licence application. The RMP should be brief and may reference supporting safety documentation maintained by the licence holder.

If you need a licence to use a radiation source, then it must be shown to be fit for purpose. This means that the radiation source must have a current certificate of compliance.
