You will require this licence if you intend to operate a business offering cars such as modern luxury sedans or stretched limousines for short-term hire. Hire cars may carry passengers for any purpose but do not have meters and can only operate if bookings are taken from the place of business of the owner prior to the trip. They cannot accept direct hiring from taxi ranks or public areas.
This licence can only be issued for luxury cars with a wheelbase of at least 2800mm, or for those within a range of vehicle age limits applicable to different makes and models of vehicles approved by the Agency.
Hire car licences are split into Metropolitan and Country licences. You cannot use a Metropolitan licence in the country and vice versa.
A separate driver accreditation is also required.
A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.
To be eligible for this licence you must be:
- a fit and proper person
- financially stable and possessing the appropriate insurance
- willing to abide by industry standards of best practice
- able to pay the licence fee.
