Code of Practice for the Housing of Caged Birds - Victoria

Service summary

You will require this code if you intend to keep caged birds. This code applies to both personal and commercial breeding, display, and sale of caged birds.

You have a legal responsibility to care for animals under your control. This code outlines the basic requirements for persons responsible for the welfare of caged birds and provides guidance for managers and others on minimum standards and a range of requirements for food and water, cages, management practices, health and well-being, bird identification, and ventilation.

Compliance with this code of practice is not mandatory. It provides guidance on how to meet your legal obligations to treat animals humanely. However, by complying with this code you can demonstrate that you have met your legal obligations. Providing that you have complied with this code can be used as a defence against a charge cruelty or aggravated cruelty to animals.

Please contact the responsible agency for more information and to ascertain level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
