You will be required to comply with this standard if you intend to construct residential buildings.

In Class 1, 2 and 3 buildings, a self contained smoke alarm complying with this standard must be installed in each dwelling or sole-occupancy unit in appropriate locations near the ceiling of every storey.

This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, and functional criteria for smoke alarms that operate using scattered light, transmitted light or ionization, intended for household or similar residential applications.
