Approved Adoption Counsellor - Victoria

Service summary

You will require this approval if you intend to work with clients involved in adoption services.

Adoption counsellors typically work with non-profit adoption agencies to offer advice, procedural guidance, and assessment throughout the adoption process, for families both offering and wanting children. They may also offer post-adoptive services and assistance.

The natural parents of a child must receive counselling from an approved counsellor before consenting to the adoption of the child.

Adoption records and adoption court reports are not ordinarily available to the public. Adoptive parents, adopted persons and their relatives are entitled to apply for adoption information held by a relevant authority. The Agency will not ordinarily provide adoption information unless the applicant has attended an interview with an approved counsellor.
