You will require this licence if you intend to use, handle or manipulate radiation sources such as radioactive substances or radiation apparatus. Radiation sources include:
- radioactive material
- ionising and non-ionising radiation apparatus (tanning units exempt)
- sealed source apparatus.
Typical occupations that may require this licence include, but are not limited to:
- general medical practitioners
- medical specialists
- nurses (working in remote areas)
- nuclear medicine physicians
- radiographers (medical/industrial)
- service engineers
- borehole loggers
- tertiary lecturers
- operators of solariums or tanning units (unless exempted).
A use licence will have conditions defining the types of radiation sources that are permitted to be used.
A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.
Licences to use radiation apparatus or radioactive substances can only be issued to individuals (natural persons). To be eligible for this licence you must:
- submit an application on the approved form
- show proof of the appropriate qualifications and experience
- provide any documentation as required by the Agency
- pay any required fees.
All operators must maintain registration with their respective practitioner registration boards, where relevant.
