Facility Construction Licence - Victoria

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to construct a radiation facility or change the use of land or an existing building to that of a radiation facility. Examples of radiation facilities and construction include:

  • certain types of particle accelerators typically found only in cancer treatment facilities
  • certain types of high activity irradiators typically found only in industrial irradiation plants
  • facilities used for the production, processing, use, storage, management or disposal of certain types of radiation sources
  • facilities where certain types of mixtures of radioactive materials are produced.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • submit an application
  • show proof of your qualifications and experience
  • provide a description of the radiation facility, the location of the proposed radiation facility to be constructed and a description of the radiation practice to be conducted
  • provide information (as determined by the Secretary) about the radiation sources or kinds of radiation sources in relation to which a radiation practice will be conducted at the proposed radiation facility
  • provide any documentation as required by the Agency
  • pay the prescribed fees.

If the land on which you intend to construct the radiation facility is owned by someone other than you, you will also need to attach the written consent of the owner or occupier of the land.


Duration of licence may be up to 3 years.
