Approval of Electrical Equipment - Victoria

Service summary

You will require this approval if you intend to sell or supply certain electrical equipment. This approval will certify that the electrical equipment is safe for use. This approval is only mandatory for prescribed electrical equipment that is considered high-risk such as battery chargers, kitchen goods, whitegoods, lamps, socket outlets and plugs.

This approval is not compulsory, by law, for non-prescribed equipment to be supplied; however, you can voluntarily apply for this approval. If you intend to supply non-prescribed equipment without approval, it will be your responsibility to ensure the equipment meets minimum safety standards.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this approval, you must:

  • ensure electrical equipment complies with its particular Australian (safety) Standard
  • supply a complete compliant production sample of the equipment
  • provide all the particulars as required by the Agency
  • pay the required fee.

Ongoing requirements

Where a modification to equipment is made once approval is granted, you must ensure that you apply to the authority for modification of approval.

Your application must be in writing in the approved form and contain all information as required by the Agency, and be accompanied by the required fee.



You must lodge a compliant test report from an approved laboratory; a sample of the electrical equipment; installation and operating instructions for the equipment; a component and material list for the equipment; and a circuit diagram of the equipment with your application.
