Geothermal Energy Extraction Licence - Victoria

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to extract geothermal energy. You will not require an extraction licence where the temperature is less than seventy degrees Celsius or the heat source is less than one kilometre below the Earth's surface.

Exemptions

This permit is not required for the extraction of geothermal energy that is:

  • situated in temperatures less than 70 degrees Celsius
  • less than one kilometre below the earth's surface.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be a holder of an exploration permit or retention lease
  • apply using the prescribed application form
  • indicate specific details about the area you are applying for
  • provide a proposed work summary, including details of technical assessment of the area
  • include any likely effects that the extraction may have on public safety
  • include the likely benefits of the proposed work relative to the economy, social and environmental impact
  • provide detail of technical qualifications of employees and of technical advice available
  • provide details of financial resources available
  • provide any other details required by the Authority
  • pay the prescribed fees.

Please note that a tenement may be required.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

It is an ongoing requirement of this licence that you lodge, and get approval, of a geothermal energy extraction development plan before carrying out geothermal energy extraction.
