Service summary

You may require this approval if you intend to keep poultry, pigeons or other birds on your property. Poultry includes fowls, peafowls, turkeys, geese and ducks.

Whether this approval is required may vary according to the zoning of your property. Approval is often required in land zoned as residential. Your Council may also prohibit the keeping of certain kinds of birds in certain areas. Limitations may also apply to the number of birds that you are allowed to keep on your property.

You may be required to keep your poultry in a structure or enclosure that meets Council specifications.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a licence to keep poultry you must satisfy the Council that:

  • The premises where the poultry are going to be kept is of sound construction;
  • The roof and walls are constructed of galvanised iron or colour coated steel;
  • The floor are is constructed from concrete or other approved material; and
  • Any other requirements under planning laws.
