Petroleum Retention Lease - Western Australia

Description

You will need this lease if you have discovered a petroleum in submerged lands that is not currently commercially viable but is likely to be in the future. Petroleum is any naturally occurring hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons, including oil and gas.

If your discovery is deemed to be commercially viable, you will need to convert your retention lease to a production licence.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this lease you must:

  • hold either an offshore petroleum exploration permit or an offshore petroleum production licence
  • demonstrate that the recovery of petroleum from the area will be commercial viable within the next 15 years.

Duration

Five years, but may be renewed provided the resource is still not commercial viable.
