Australian New Zealand Standard AS / NZS 2211 Laser Safety - Western Australia

Service summary

You will be required to comply with this standard if you use lasers or laser products at your workplace. This standard only applies to lasers used at workplaces that are not construction sites.

You must ensure that all lasers and laser products are classified labelled and used in accordance with this standard. The specific parts of the standard you must comply with are:

  • AS / NZS 2211.1:2004 Safety of Laser Products - Equipment Classification, Requirements and Users Guide; and
  • AS / NZS 2211.10:2004 Safety of Laser Products - Application Guidelines and Explanatory Notes.

This standard provides information on the physics relating to the dangers posed by lasers along with minimum requirements and specific guidance for the classification, labelling, safe operation and maintenance of lasers and laser products.

A laser is any device that can produce or amplify electromagnetic radiation in the wave length range from 100 nanometres to one millimetre by the process of controlled stimulated emission. This does not include any electric light globe, fluorescent light tube, electric radiator used for heating, radio or video communication equipment, domestic cooking appliance using high powered lamps or navigation or search lights. A laser product is any product or assembly of components that incorporates a laser.
