Special Prospecting Authority (Onshore Petroleum and Geothermal) - Western Australia

Service summary

You will require this authority if you intend to conduct initial exploration activities for petroleum or geothermal resources:

  • In an area that is not currently under a mining title;
  • The subject of competing applications; or
  • Identified by the Agency for a future acreage release.

This authority allows you to conduct exploration activities including geophysical and geochemical surveys (or other operational activities) in the area to which it applies. Please note that it does not allow you to create any wells.

This authority is intended as a means of preliminary assessment of the prospectivity of areas where little or no exploration has been undertaken prior to a more permanent exploration licence being applied for.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this authority you must:

  • Specify exactly which areas it relates to;
  • Specify the operations that you propose to carry on and the block or blocks in respect of which you propose to carry on those operations to the level of detail required by the Agency; and
  • Pay the prescribed fee.

Duration

Authorities are restricted in time to a maximum six months for the field work and generally a further six months to enable the option to be exercised.
