Approval to Construct or Install an Apparatus for the Treatment of Sewage - Western Australia

Service summary

You will require this approval if you intend to construct or install an apparatus for the treatment of sewage or the disposal of effluent and liquid wastes. A sewerage apparatus includes septic tanks, aerobic treatment units, compost toilets and any other apparatus used for the treatment of sewage.

The following types of apparatus must be approved by the local Council:

  • Apparatus which is intended to service a single dwelling only; or
  • Apparatus which services a building which produces no more than 540 litres of sewage per day.

If the apparatus services multiple dwellings, or a building that produces more than 540 litres of sewage per day, you must contact the Department of Health for approval. These applications must be accompanied by a report from the local council on whether or not approval should be granted (a local government report).

It is illegal to install a sewerage apparatus without an approval. It is also an offence to commission a system prior to inspection and approval from the Council.
