Teacher Registration - Western Australia

Description

You may need this registration if you intend to teach in an educational venue. Educational venues include schools, kindergartens, child care centres and detention centres. There are four categories of registration:

  • full registration
  • provisional registration
  • limited registration
  • non-practising registration.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for full or provisional registration you must:

  • have a teaching qualification from an accredited initial teacher education programme or recognised equivalent
  • meet the professional standards approved by the Board
  • be a fit and proper person to be a registered teacher
  • have the written and oral English language skills suitable for registration as a teacher.

To be eligible for a limited registration the nominee must:

  • have been offered a teaching position in an educational venue
  • have the required skills, experience and / or qualifications for the duties of the teaching position offered
  • be a fit and proper person to be a registered teacher
  • have the written and oral English language skills suitable for registration as a teacher.

To determine whether you are fit to be a teacher, the Agency will take into account a range of factors including your history of compliance with relevant regulations, your criminal history, and any behaviour which does not meet the standard expected of a teacher.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

To be eligible for renewal of your registration, you will need to have meet certain standards for professional engagement and development.

Duration

Full registration lasts five years, limited / provisional registration is up to three years , and non-practising registration lasts two years

An application for limited registration must be made by an employer. If you are an employer and you have made an offer of a teaching position to an individual (a nominee), you may apply for limited registration on behalf of the nominee. An application for limited registration should be made where the individual you intend to employ does not meet the requirements for full or provisional registration.
