Conduct Activities in a Waterway Management Area - Western Australia

Service summary

You may require a licence or another form of permission if you intend to undertake certain activities that affect waterway management areas. There are five waterway management areas in Western Australia:

  • Albany waterways
  • Avon River
  • Wilson Inlet
  • Peel Inlet
  • Leschenault Inlet.

You will require a licence if you intend to do any of the following within one of the above waterways:

  • carry out dredging or reclamation
  • discharge or dispose of any matter into a waterway
  • construct a retaining wall on a waterway
  • construct a boat ramp, jetty, or boat house.

You will need prior permission from the Department if you plan on carrying out any of the following activities in one of the above waterways:

  • disturbing the banks or foreshore (such as by constructing a drain or breakwater)
  • launching a boat from an area that is not privately owned or an approved launching place
  • using aircraft on any waters or associated land with the waterway area.
