Marine Pilot Exemption Certificate - Western Australia

Service summary

You will require this certificate if you are a master of a vessel which is required to carry a pilot, but you intend to operate without a licensed pilot. Your certificate will specify the particular port or ports within which you are able to act as a pilot.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this exemption you must:

  • Be a permanent resident of Australia;
  • Have extensive knowledge of a particular port;
  • Undertake a practical examination;
  • Submit a certificate of health;
  • Complete the required forms; and
  • Pay the prescribed fee.

The practical examination will cover:

  • Coastal conditions and navigational hazards at the subject port;
  • Creating nautical charts for the subject port;
  • Traffic, communications and other local rules for the subject port; and
  • Relevant laws and regulations.
