Licence to Erect or Maintain a Sign - Western Australia

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to erect or maintain a sign or portable sign on a thoroughfare, public place or on private land. Types of signs can include but are not limited to:

  • For sale or lease signs;
  • Display home signs;
  • Horizontal signs;
  • Illuminated signs;
  • Pylon or town sign;
  • Rural producer's sign
  • Portable signs;
  • Political signs; or
  • Sign panels.

A sign licence is to be submitted with planning approval. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • Provide the council with plans, drawn to a scale of not less than 1:50 showing the size, position, design and inscription intended to be used;
  • Submit a certificate from a practising Structural Engineer certifying the structural integrity of a building intended to support a special pylon sign or a roof sign; and
  • Furnish in writing any further particulars required by the Building Surveyor.
