Notification of Animal Food Processing Premises - Western Australia

Service summary

You will be required to notify your Council if you intend to operate a pet meat processing establishment or a knackery. A pet meat processing establishment is where the carcasses of animals are processed, identified, handled, packed or stored. A knackery is an establishment where animals are slaughtered for pet meat.

Animals that are used in a pet meat processing establishment or knackery include:

  • Buffalo;
  • Camel;
  • Cattle;
  • Donkey;
  • Emu;
  • Goat;
  • Horse;
  • Kangaroo;
  • Mule;
  • Pig;
  • Poultry;
  • Rabbit; and
  • Sheep.

This notification will also authorise you to sell unpackaged pet meat (provided the storage container used for the meat complies with the regulations).
