You will require this licence if you intend to construct, alter or deepen a well. A well is an opening in the ground used to obtain access to underground water. For the purposes of this licence it also includes all works associated with the well.
An artesian well is a well from which water flows (or has flowed) naturally to the surface without any pumping. A licence is required for all wells of this type. A non-artesian well is a well from which water does not flow naturally and instead is raised by pumping or some other artificial means. A licence is only required for wells of this type in certain areas determined by the Agency.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.
To be eligible for this licence you must:
- Provide specifications of the construction of the well, including a plan of the geographical location of the well;
- Set out the reason for constructing the well and the ways you intend to use the water from it; and
- Submit the required forms.
