Australian New Zealand Standard AS / NZS 1873: Powder-Actuated (PA) Hand-Held Fastening Tools - Western Australia

Service summary

You will be required to comply with this standard if you use explosive powered tools at your workplace.

An explosive-powered tool (EPT) is defined as a tool or device whereby a stud, pin, dowel, screw, rivet, spike or other object is driven against, into or through a substance by means of an explosive. It does not include a nail gun, by definition, as an explosive charge is not used.

This standard provides guidance on the selection, operation and maintenance of the explosive-powered tools and their explosive charges and fasteners. This standard also contains requirements for their design, construction and performance.

The explosive-powered tools and their charges must comply with the design requirements in this standard. You must also use them only in accordance with this standard.

There are four parts to this standard. The specific versions of those parts you must comply with are:

  • AS / NZS 1873.1:2003 Power-actuated (PA) hand-held fastening tools - Selection, Operation and Maintenance;
  • AS / NZS 1873.2:2003 Power-actuated (PA) hand-held fastening tools - Design and Construction;
  • AS / NZS 1873.3:2003 Power-actuated (PA) hand-held fastening tools - Charges; and
  • AS / NZS 1873.4:2003 Power-actuated (PA) hand-held fastening tools - Fasteners.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance that may be required.
