ACT Driver's Licence - Australian Capital Territory

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to drive a motor vehicle on a public road. It is illegal to drive on a public road in the Australian Capital Territory without a current driver's licence. Your licence will authorise you to drive a particular class of vehicle. Licences are available in the following classes:

  • Motorcycle (including mopeds / scooters);
  • Car;
  • Light rigid;
  • Medium rigid;
  • Heavy rigid;
  • Heavy combination; and
  • Multi-combination.

New licensees will start with a learner's licence which must be held for a minimum of 6 months. The learner will then progress to a provisional licence which after being held for 3 years will transfer to a full licence. Licence conditions vary between licence types. You will require a public vehicle licence if you intend to drive a public vehicle for hire or reward.

If you hold a licence from another Australian jurisdiction (other than a learner), you can transfer this licence to the ACT at no cost. Learner licence holders are required to pass a Road Ready course and pass a knowledge test before being issued with an ACT learner licence.

If you hold a licence from another country, you may be able to obtain an ACT equivalent licence.
