British Standard BS 463: Specification for Sockets for Wire Ropes - Australian Capital Territory


You must comply with this standard if you manufacture or use wire rope in scaffolding. This standard sets out the minimum requirements for:

  • Sockets for wire rope; and
  • Other types of fittings for wire rope.

This standard is referenced to in the Catalogue of Australian Standards in two instances:

  • BS 463-1:1958: Specification for sockets for wire ropes. Inch units; and
  • BS 463-2:1958: Specification for sockets for wire ropes. Metric units.

These standards specify materials and dimensions of drop-forged sockets of the open or closed type, for wire ropes of 5/16 in to 1 5/8 (8mm to 56mm) in diameter.
