Learner Driver Standards - Australian Capital Territory


You will be required to comply with this Standard if you are an Accredited Driving Instructor. The Standard is intended to be used for the continuous training and assessment of a person's suitability to be issued with a provisional car licence. It is mandatory that instructors assess a student using the Authority's Standard. The Standard outlines requirements for:

  • vehicle controls
  • cabin drill (i.e. what a driver must do when getting into or out of a vehicle)
  • starting up procedure
  • moving off from a stationary position
  • gear changing
  • steering control
  • turns, left and right
  • speed control
  • slowing procedure
  • stopping procedure
  • hill starts
  • give way rules
  • reversing
  • right angle parking (front in)
  • reverse parallel parking
  • u-turns
  • turning around on the road (e.g.three point turns)
  • lane changing, merging, entering freeways, form one lane
  • overtaking
  • observation skills, visual searching and scanning, hazard recognition
  • compliance with the system of vehicle control
  • driving on busy roads and unfamiliar roads.
