You will require this registration if you intend to operate a co-operative in the Australian Capital Territory. A co-operative is an organisation owned and controlled by its members that operates primarily for economic, social or cultural benefit of those members. A co-operative can be either:
- a distributing co-operative where the organisation must have share capital. Distributing co-operatives give returns or distributions on surplus share capital to members by way of bonus shares, dividends or rebates; or
- a non-trading co-operative which must not distribute any of the surplus to members. These are not for profit organisations that may or may not have shares. They exist for the purposes of community benefit rather than individual profit or benefit.
