You may require approved stock tags if you breed, raise or manage livestock in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). If you own tagable stock, you can apply for a tag number for the stock. Stock includes any horse, cattle, sheep, alpaca, swine, goat or other declared animal. Tags may either be a label, mark or electronic device that is attached or placed on the stock, and are used for identifying that stock.
You must ensure that the tag you intend to use is an approved tag. Approved tags include:
- an approved national livestock identification system (NLIS) device
- an approved mark
- a special purpose tag.
If the tag you intend to use is not an approved tag, you can apply to have the tag approved. The Agency may approve a tag for tagable stock in relation to the following:
- A holding
- A public road
- An area of public land
- A saleyard
- An abattoir.
