You may require this classification approval certificate if you intend to produce a film, publication or computer game for release to the general public. If the Agency has approved a classification tool for any type of publication, film or computer game and it is used to produce a decision on the classification of your publication, film or computer game then you are required to apply for a certificate.
All films for public exhibition, videos and DVDs offered for sale or hire, and computer games offered for sale or hire or made available in amusement arcades are required to be classified for their primary content and any additional advertising material.
The following are taken into consideration when making a decision on a classification of a publication, film or computer game:
- Standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults
- The literary, artistic or educational merit (if any)
- The general character of the publication, film or computer game
- The target audience.
These requirements apply to all material intended for distribution in Australia.
