Approved Collection Centres - Australian Government


You will require this approval if you intend to operate a centre from which pathology specimens are collected. Approval of an eligible collection centre will allow you to claim Medicare benefits for pathology services you provide.

For a pathologists' services to be eligible for a Medicare rebate they must be conducted by an approved pathologist in an approved pathology laboratory. This licence is for the premises only and is to be used in conjunction with an Approved Pathology Authority and may be part of larger facility.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this approval you must:

  • be a current Approved Pathology Authority
  • own or be in agreement to use the necessary classification of Laboratory
  • staff the facility with people employed or engaged by an APA
  • meet the Guidelines for Approved Pathology Collection Centres
  • apply for each Approved Collection Centre location
  • pay the fee and provide proof of payment
  • provide supporting documents showing the Approved Pathology Authority connection to the premises used by the Approved Collection Centre.

New Approved Collection Centre approvals are granted for a 24 month period. For Approved Collection Centres renewing or subject to merger or acquisition, approved applications are granted for a 6 month period.
