AS / NZS 1841/1850 Portable fire extinguishers - Australian Government


You will be required to comply with these standards if you operate a ship registered in Australia, or any ship in the territorial sea of Australia.

If your ship is equipped with motor lifeboats, they must carry 2 portable fire extinguishers that are capable of discharging foam or dry powder of a kind that is suitable for extinguishing oil fire.

The standards that portable fire extinguishers must comply with are:

  • AS / NZS 1841.1:2007;
  • AS / NZS 1841.4:2007;
  • AS / NZS 1841.5:2007;
  • AS / NZS 1841.8:2007; and
  • AS / NZS 1850:2009.
