Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes - Australian Government

Description

You may be required to comply with this Code if you intend to care for or use animals for scientific purposes.

This code encompasses all aspects of the care and use of, or interaction with, animals for scientific purposes in medicine, biology, agriculture, veterinary and other animal sciences, industry, training and teaching. This includes their use in research, teaching, field trials, product testing, diagnosis, the production of biological products and environmental studies, and may also cover other activities such as the use of animals for breeding, research, or training in wildlife parks and zoos.

The code provides general principles for the care and use of animals, specifies the responsibilities of investigators and institutions, and details the terms of reference, membership and operation of animal ethics committees. It also provides guidelines for the humane conduct of scientific and teaching activities, and for the acquisition of animals and their care, including their environmental and physical needs.

Please contact the Agency for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
