Cargo Handling and Equipment - Australian Government


You must comply with this code if you operate a cargo ship or freight vessel, or are involved in loading or unloading cargo at a port. This code prescribes the standards for machinery and equipment that belong to a vessel and are used for loading or unloading the vessel, including:

  • inspection
  • testing
  • maintenance
  • operation.

This code also gives effect to the following instruments of the International Labour Organisation which apply to machinery, appliances and equipment that belong to a vessel and are used for loading or unloading the vessel:

  • Convention No. 27, Marking of Weight (Packages Transported by Vessels)
  • Convention No. 152, Occupational Safety and Health (Dock Work)
  • Recommendation No.160, Occupational Safety and Health (Dock Work).
