Cosmetics Standard 2007 - Australian Government

You may be required to comply with this standard if you intend to manufacture cosmetics, or import cosmetics into Australia.

The standard sets out mandatory requirements and guidelines for certain products that are marketed as cosmetics in Australia. It adopts the revised Australian/New Zealand Sunscreen Standard (AS/NZS 2604:2012 Sunscreen products - Evaluation and classification), known as the 2012 Sunscreen Standard. Products must comply with the specified SPF and broad spectrum performance, labelling and testing requirements of either the 1998 Sunscreen Standard or the 2012 Sunscreen Standard.

This applies to certain products within the following categories of products:

  • face and nail products
  • skin care
  • oral hygiene
  • sunscreens
  • anti-dandruff products.

A full list of product types is contained in Schedule 1 of the Standard.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required by your business.
