Federal Interstate Registration Scheme (FIRS) - Australian Government


You will require this registration if you operate, or intend to operate, passenger and freight vehicles solely engaged in interstate commerce including the transfer of people, goods or services between different states of Australia.

The Federal Interstate Registration Scheme (FIRS) requires the registration for heavy vehicles weighing 4.5 tonnes and over.

Examples of the type of vehicle registered under this scheme are:

  • Trucks;
  • Prime movers;
  • B-doubles;
  • Load-carrying trailers and dollies;
  • Tour buses; and
  • Coaches.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To register, your vehicle must be:

  • Over 4.5 tonnes;
  • Registered;
  • Covered by third party insurance;
  • Declared roadworthy; and
  • Inspected no more than 45 days prior to registration.

Owners in remote areas which are beyond a radius of 250 km from an authorised inspection station may have their vehicles inspected up to 120 days before registration.

Operators wishing to register vehicles under this scheme simply apply at the registration authority in your jurisdiction of residence.
