Marine Order 95 (Marine Pollution Prevention - Garbage) - Australian Government

Description

You are required to comply with this Marine Order if you intend to operate a regulated Australian vessel for commercial or recreational use, or a foreign vessel within Australian waters.

This Order provides specification for the prevention of garbage from entering the marine environment. The Order prohibits garbage from being expelled from a vessel into the marine environment within Australian waters. Under the Order, garbage is described as any item generated during the normal operation of the ship which is liable to be disposed of continuously or periodically, and is considered harmful to the marine environment. This includes:

  • all kinds of food
  • domestic and operational waste
  • all plastics
  • cargo residues
  • incinerator ashes
  • cooking oil
  • fishing gear
  • animal carcasses.

If you are carrying solid bulk cargoes which are harmful to the marine environment, you will have to classify and declare. The criteria for determining the classification of the cargoes has been inserted into Appendix I to Annex V of MARPOL

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance that may be required.
