Offshore Petroleum Exploration Permit - Australian Government

Description

You will require this permit if you intend to mine for petroleum at sea. This permit provides an exclusive right to explore within a permit zone for areas suitable for petroleum extraction or for potential greenhouse gas storage formations. It also allows exploration, works and operations in the permit area for a potential greenhouse gas injection site.

There are four types of permits that can be applied for:

  • Work-bid petroleum exploration permit;
  • Cash-bid petroleum exploration permit;
  • Special petroleum exploration permit over a surrendered block or certain other blocks; and
  • A boundary-change petroleum exploration permit granted as a result of a change in the boundary of the coastal waters of a State or Territory.

Please note that permits are limited, work-bid permits are offered to the most deserving applicant while cash-bid permits are offered to the highest bidder.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

Applications for areas notified in the annual release of offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage exploration acreage should be accompanied with details on proposed exploration work programs. The details that you will be required to provide are:

  • Estimated expenditure (such as seismic surveys, exploration wells etc.);
  • Your technical expertise; and
  • The adequacy of your financial resources to meet work obligations must also be detailed.

You must provide a Title Assessment Report if you hold a petroleum exploration permit. The report must be provided within 30 days of the anniversary of the title being awarded or at any time required by the Agency. Information required in the report varies depending on the scope of your operations.

Duration

Initial term 6 years; can be renewed for two 5 year periods or as deemed appropriate.
