Refrigerant Handling Licence - Australian Government

Description

You will require this authorisation if you intend to carry out work in relation to refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) equipment.

Carrying out work in relation to RAC equipment means to do anything with a fluorocarbon refrigerant, or a component of RAC equipment, that could potentially cause the risk of the refrigerant being emitted. These tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • decanting a refrigerant
  • manufacturing a refrigerant
  • installing, commissioning or decommissioning RAC equipment
  • servicing or maintaining RAC equipment.

Refrigerant means any:

  • CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons)
  • HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons)
  • HFCs (Hydroflourocarbons)
  • PFCs (Perfluorocarbons)
  • Halon (Haloalkane or Halomethane) that is, or has been, used in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

There are several classes of licence that may be granted:

  • full refrigeration and air conditioning licence (can undertake any RAC industry work except for within the automotive industry)
  • automotive air conditioning licence
  • trainee licences
  • restricted heat pump installation and decommissioning licence
  • restricted domestic refrigeration and air conditioning appliances licence.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to receive this licence you must:

  • be a fit and proper person
  • supply details about relevant training and experience
  • have completed an eligible competency based training course.

Maximum 3 years.
