National Code of Practice for the Preparation of Material Safety Data Sheets NOHSC:2011(2003) - Australian Capital Territory

Description

You will be required to comply with this code if you are required to prepare Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) during the course of your work. A MSDS must be prepared if your work involves the use of, manufacture or exposure to dangerous or hazardous substances. Compliance with this code will ensure the MSDS is prepared in accordance with the recommended formats in Australia. This code of practice applies to:

  • Materials classified as hazardous substances and / or dangerous goods; and
  • Materials which may give rise to health, safety or environmental effects when used in the workplace.

Suppliers must produce MSDS for all hazardous substances and / or dangerous goods. An MSDS provides employers, self-employed persons, workers and other health and safety representatives with the necessary information to safely manage the risk from hazardous or dangerous substance exposure. It describes the chemical and physical properties of a material and provides advice on safe handling and use of the material. The term Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is also commonly used overseas.

It should be noted that there is an inconsistency clause listed in the Act where regulations that are in conflict with approved codes of practice are to be complied with. Any requirement of this code that is in conflict with what a regulation states may be ignored, and the regulation complied with.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance that may be required.
