Approval of Institutions - Australian Government


You will be required to apply for this approval if you provide public exhibits of art and cultural objects and intend to borrow a cultural object for exhibition to the public at your institution. This approval covers all objects that are of interest for the following reasons:

  • Archaeological;
  • Artistic;
  • Ethnological;
  • Historical;
  • Literary;
  • Scientific; or
  • Technological reasons.

This approval is required for any institution that borrows cultural objects for public exhibition, such as museums and art galleries.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to receive approval you must:

  • Show expertise in the management of collections of art and cultural objects;
  • Have clear procedures for the identification of the provenance of objects collected and exhibited;
  • Have clear procedures for negotiating temporary loan arrangements;
  • Show that the lender has the legal authority to lend the object;
  • Show that valid export licences or permits have been received for the object in its country of origin; and
  • Submit a detailed application.
