Certificate of Competency - Australian Government

Description

You will require this certificate if you intend to work as a seafarer in Australian waters.

A seafarer is any person who works on board a vessel on the business of the vessel (including a master, engineer, marine engineer driver, coxswain, mate and hand), other than the following:

  • A licensed pilot of the vessel;
  • An owner of the vessel or a person (except the master) representing the owner;
  • Law enforcement personnel;
  • If the vessel is a special purpose vessel-special personnel in relation to the vessel; or
  • A person temporarily employed on the vessel in port.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility Requirements

New entrants will need to complete an approved course at a Registered Training Organisation and meet the competency and medical requirements. To be eligible for a certificate of competency you must:

  • Fill out the required application form;
  • Obtain a current first aid certificate; and
  • Provide any proof of other qualifications as required.

There are several kinds of Competency certificates and the requirements are slightly different for each. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

Duration

A five year National System certificate is available.
