Cultural Heritage Export Permit - Australian Government


You will be required to apply for this permit if you intend to export objects of cultural significance outside of Australia.

A cultural heritage export permit is required by individuals for the export of individual objects of Australia's cultural heritage. This includes:

  • Works of art
  • Fossils
  • Vintage vehicles
  • Books
  • Medals
  • Aboriginal heritage items.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this export permit you must apply in writing. Your application will be referred for assessment by expert examiners.

If an Australian protected object is already overseas and you wish to import it into Australia and subsequently re-export it, an application must be made (prior to import) for a Certificate of Exemption from export control.
