Master Fisherman's Licence: Torres Strait - Australian Government

Description

You will require this licence if you conduct commercial fishing in the Torres Strait protected zone. The Protected Zone is the sea area between mainland New Guinea and Australia.

Marine species covered by this permit include:

  • Tropical Rock Lobster
  • Spanish Mackerel
  • Pearl Shell
  • Prawn
  • Sea Cucumbers
  • Trochus
  • Crab
  • Fin Fish
  • all sub species.

Traditional inhabitants who hold a Traditional Inhabitants Fishing Boat Licence do not require this licence.

Eligibility Requirements

New licences are only issued to traditional inhabitants, except in the prawn fishery area. Non-traditional inhabitants who want to enter a Torres Strait commercial fishery must buy one of the transferable licences from an existing operator. Significant documentation and compliance guidelines apply to this licence, including recording information in a logbook relating to the taking and processing of fish.
