Permit to Undertake Prohibited Activities - Shipwrecks - Australian Government

Description

You will require this permit if you intend to undertake any recreational, research or commercial activity that has the potential to damage or interfere with an historic shipwreck, relic or protected zone.

A historic shipwreck or relic is the remains of ship or item belonging to the remains of a ship declared to be historic. To be declared to be historic, it must be within Australian waters and be at least 75 years old. A protected zone is the water, seabed and / or air around a historic shipwreck or relic. A protected zone cannot exceed 200 hectares. Prohibited activities that require a permit include:

  • destroying or causing damage to a historic shipwreck or historic relic
  • causing interference with a historic shipwreck or historic relic
  • causing the disposal of a historic shipwreck or historic relic
  • causing the removal of a historic shipwreck or historic relic from Australia (including State waters), from Australian waters or from waters above the continental shelf of Australia
  • bringing equipment for diving, salvage or recovery operations into a protected zone
  • using any equipment, explosives, instruments or tools within a protected zone
  • causing a ship carrying any such equipment, explosives, instruments or tools to enter, or remain within, a protected zone
  • trawl, dive or engage in any other underwater activity within a protected zone
  • moor or use ships within a protected zone.
