Space Licence - Australian Government

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to use a particular kind of launch vehicle connected to:

  • Operating of a launch facility in Australia; or
  • Undertaking any activities directly connected with operating a launch facility in Australia.

A launch vehicle is a vehicle that can carry a payload into or back from an area beyond the distance of 100 km above mean sea level. A launch facility is a facility or place specifically designed or constructed as a place from which space objects can be launched.

A space licence is approval that a minister may grant to a person operate a launch facility in Australia; or undertake any activities directly connected with operating a launch facility.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

The following requirements must be met for you to be eligible for this licence:

  • You have to be one or more of the following; an educational institution; a non-profit organisation; and or a scientific organisation
  • The minister has to find that sufficient funding in regards to constructing and operation of the launch facility are met
  • The minister has to find that there will be no interference with Australia's national security
  • You have to obtained all necessary environmental approached approved and have an adequate environmental plan informed by Australian law
  • You have to be a person / corporation to which section 51 (xix) of the constitution applies to
  • You have to meet the criteria for launch facility, launch vehicle and flight paths.

Duration

Up to 20 years subject to an annual review.
