Amphibian Keeper's Licence - New South Wales

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to keep frogs or tadpoles. This licence authorises you to obtain frogs and tadpoles from other people who legally hold them. This licence does not apply to people intending to sell frogs or tadpoles to a pet shop or intending to obtain frogs or tadpoles from the wild.

The amphibian licensing and record-keeping system allows the Agency to monitor which amphibian species are being kept, bred and traded.

There are two classes of licence:

The Class 1 Licence allows you to keep 45 different species of frog, including common species that are easy to take care of including:

  • Green tree frog;
  • Red-eyed tree frog;
  • Dainty tree frog;
  • White-lipped tree frog;
  • Person's tree frog; and
  • Common froglet.

The Class 2 Licence allows you to keep 29 different species of frog that are rare and / or more difficult to keep than those under the class 1 licence.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must lodge a completed application form and pay any required fees.

  • The Class 1 licence is available to people over the age of 16 years who have basic knowledge of the needs of the animals.
  • The Class 2 licence is only available to people who are over the age of 18 years who have had at least two years' experience in caring for Class 1 frogs.
