Authority to Obtain and Use Pentobarbitone Sodium for Humane Euthanasia of Animals - New South Wales


You will require this authorisation if you are a veterinary practitioner who intends to obtain and use pentobarbitone sodium to euthanise animals.

Pentobarbitone sodium is a barbiturate drug (a central nervous system depressant) that can be used as a sedative and hypnotic, or in this case for humane animal destruction (euthanasia).

Please be aware that pentobarbitone sodium must be kept separately from all other goods in a secure location and that you are required to keep a separate register of all pentobarbitone sodium that is obtained or used.
