Beekeeping Registration - New South Wales

Description

You will require this biosecurity registration if you intend to deal with bees (Apis mellifera L.) or conduct beekeeping within NSW. 'Dealing' with bees includes the following activities:

  • keeping, storing or having custody of bees
  • buying, selling or supplying bees
  • importing or acquiring bees- transporting bees
  • releasing bees
  • breeding or cultivating bees
  • experimenting on bees.

Registration is required to ensure that all activities involving bees do not cause a biosecurity risk.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Exemptions

You may be exempt from this registration if you are authorised to deal with bees in another state and you do not intend to keep the bees in NSW for more 3 months in any 12 month period.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this registration, you must:

  • use a frame hive to store bees
  • have the capacity to comply with biosecurity duties and regulations
  • satisfy the Secretary that you are a suitable person for registration.

Ongoing Eligibility Requirements

If you are granted registration, you must:

  • notify the Secretary within 7 days if your contact details change
  • keep a written (or digital) record of all hives for a period of 5 years
  • notify the Secretary within 28 days if you sell or dispose of a hive.

Duration

Registration remains in force for a period (not exceeding 5 years) specified by the Secretary.

This registration is only necessary for those who intend to deal with the honey bee.

Conditions may be placed on your registration.

The Secretary may require you to produce additional documentation before granting registration.

Once you are registered, you may apply for a variation of your registration.

Disqualified Persons or Entities

You may not be eligible for this registration if:

  • you have provided false or misleading information to the Secretary
  • you have a history of non-compliance with the Biosecurity Act or Regulations
  • you have previously held biosecurity registration and that registration has been cancelled
  • you are considered an unsuitable person for registration by the Secretary
  • there would be an unacceptable biosecurity risk if registration was granted.
