Special Liquor Licence - Northern Territory

Description

The holder of a Special Liquor Licence is legally permitted to sell alcoholic beverages for events of specific duration. Holders of Special Liquor Licenses are usually community organisations but may also be existing licensees, individuals, registered companies or partnerships. The Licensing Commission may grant Special Liquor Licences for up to five consecutive days or ten days for major events.

Eligibility requirements

An application for the grant of a special licence shall be lodged with the Director not later than seven days before the date or the first date in respect of which the application is made.

An administration fee must be provided when lodging this application.

If you are applying for the grant of a special licence in relation to a "Major Event/Function" eg. Street Party, Festivals etc. It is essential that the special licence application is lodged no later than 30 days before the date of the proposed function. You will also need to refer to the guidelines on applications for major events as to the additional requirements that must be satisfied before the Commission will consider your application.

Duration

Licences are valid for a period determined by the Licensing Commission. This is normally five days or less, or up to ten days for major events. Separate licences are required for separate occasions.

Completed forms must be accompanied by the prescribed fee and supporting information which includes:

  • contact information and description of the function including times;
  • strategies to ensure responsible serving of alcohol;
  • details of any entertainment to be provided;
  • estimated attendance numbers;
  • number of licensed Crowd Controllers;
  • detailed description of the neighbourhood; and a
  • detailed plan of the area to be licensed.

Where the event is in a public restricted area, the owner, manager or controller of the public place must provide prior approval for the function.
