Every organisation that wants to own a railway and/or operate trains in the Northern Territory must apply for a rail safety accreditation.
Organisations already accredited elsewhere in Australia can apply through the Regulator who issued their principal accreditation for its mutual recognition in Northern Territory.
Private sidings only require a registration, not accreditation. The registration process is much simpler than accreditation.
The requirements for gaining rail safety accreditation is detailed in the Rail Safety Act 2010 and the Rail Safety Regulations 2010.
